Ringo Starr Birthplace Not Worthy Of Preserving

Ringo Starr Birthplace Not Worthy Of Preserving
By VVN Music

English Heritage, the organization in charge of naming places in England that should be preserved, has ruled that the birthplace of Ringo Starr in Liverpool is not worth adding to their list.

The home at 9 Madryn Street was scheduled for demolition before a committee was formed and petitioned the British government to make the house a historical site. The local council wants to knock down the home and surrounding streets to make way for new housing.

This past August, Philip Coppell, a Beatles tour guide for the past twenty years and Chairman of the Save Madryn Street Society, told the Britain's Telegraph "What the council is proposing to do is nothing short of criminal and they will be convicted in the court of international public opinion if they go ahead with it. If the council in Stratford wanted to knock down Shakespeare's birthplace and move it to the NEC there would be outrage. The only difference between the two is that Shakespeare has a four hundred year head-start on the Beatles.

"If they move it to the museum it will lose the sense of the area where it stands. Seeing it in a museum is just not going to have the same impact as visiting the street where Ringo was born. Ringo Starr lived in other houses, but he was only born in one. If it's knocked-down, even if it is moved, fans all over the world are going to be up in arms. They will just not understand how Liverpool can carry-out this kind of cultural vandalism."

Making the recent decision even more controversial is the fact that English Heritage recently ruled that the street crossing in London where the cover of Abbey Road was shot should be preserved. A spokesperson for Save Britain's Heritage, which opposes the demolition, told the website BDOnline "How is it possible to argue that (the) birthplace of Ringo Starr is less important than the Abbey Road crossing? Madryn Street, which Ringo frequently refers to in his own writings and lyrics, draws in thousands of visitors from across the globe.

"It is in an area desperately trying to cling on to its historic identity in the face enforced blight and threatened destruction. The house and neighbourhood embody the romance of the Beatles story."

(I hope they get a lot of pressure put on them so they do the right thing by letting Ringo's birthplace stand. Is it just because Ringo doesn't get respect, because they always portray him as the goofy one...Ringo deserves credit and respect! I LoVE Ringo :)

Deborah Harry Will See In New Year With A Gig

BLONDIE frontwoman DEBORAH HARRY won't be joining revellers for the traditional drunken countdown on New Year's Eve - she always plays a show on December 31 to give her good luck for the next 12 months.

The singer refuses to make plans with friends and family to ring in the New Year, insisting it's important for her to play a gig instead.

She tells Britain's Live magazine, "I have a rule - I always work on New Year's Eve. I don't care where I do it, whether it's a club or a bar or a big stage, it doesn't matter. I just have to work because I always feel it's symbolic for me for the next year."

It's always nice to do something you love whether on new year's eve or any other holiday you like that becomes a tradition with you...it gives greater meaning to the holiday.

Keith Richards' Bangers & Mash Recipe Feat in His Book

Keith Richards Recommends Bangers And Mash For Dinner
By Paul Cashmere

Keith Richards’ says his favourite meal is Bangers and Mash and he has decided to share his recipe in his book ‘Life’.

“When I’m at home I cook for myself, usually bangers and mash, with some variation on the mash but not much,” he says.

We cannot endorse Keith as a dietician but the Stones rock star recommends you “hit it when you’re hungry”. “We’ve been trained from babyhood to have three square meals a day, the full factory-industrial revolution of how you’re supposed to eat. Before then it was never like that. When the hooter goes, you eat,” he writes.

Anyway, onto Keith’s cooking hint. “I’ve been cooking bangers all my life and I only just found out from this lady on TV that you have to put the bangers in a cold pan. No preheating. Preheating agitates them, thats why they’re called bangers. Very slowly, start them off cold. And then just be prepared to have a drink and wait,” he says.

He says he used the same method when he was cooking Goat’s Head Soup (but let’s not go there).

So here it is, the Keith Richards recipe for Bangers and Mash:

1. First off, find a butcher who makes the sausages fresh.
2. Fry up a mixture of onions and bacon and seasoning.
3. Get the spuds on the boil with a dash of vinegar, some chopped onions and salt (seasoning to taste). Chuck in some peas with the spuds. (Throw in some chopped carrots too, if you like). Now we’re talking.
4. Now you have the choice of grilling or broiling your bangers or frying. Throw them on a low heat with the simmering bacon and onions (or in a cold pan, as the TV lady said, and add the onion and bacon in a bit) and let the fuckers rock gently, turning every few minutes.
5. Mash yer spuds and whatever.
6. Bangers are now fat free (as possible).
7. Gravy if desired.
8. HP sauce.

Keith’s book ‘Life’ is out now through Orion Books.

(LOL Bangers & Mash it is :) Maybe Keith should have a cooking show hmm? I know from quite a few of my British friends that Bangers & Mash is a popular choice over there, think it's a comfort type thing, sort of like we have meatloaf & mash potatoes.)

Patti Smith Wins National Book Award

Patti Smith Wins National Book Award
By Tim Cashmere

Patti Smith has taken the National Book Award for nonfiction home on Wednesday night for her book ‘Just Kids’.

The book tells the story of her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe and details a time when New York was the hip and swinging place to be.

“I dreamed of having a book of my own, of writing one that I could put on a shelf,” she said at the ceremony while accepting her award. “Please, no matter how we advance technologically, please don’t abandon the book. There is nothing in our material world more beautiful than the book.”

The National Book Awards have been running in New York since 1950 with the goal of “enhancing the public’s awareness of exceptional books written by fellow Americans, and to increase the popularity of reading in general.”

Source: Undercover

(Congrats to Patti :) I think everyone at some point in their lives dreams or fantasizes about writing a book, maybe not about your own life, but about something. I agree with Patti - that let's hope that 'the book' always remains a part of the world and doesn't become all digital. I know owning and reading a real book is still special as oppose to reading something online. To me it's a lot like having an album/record it's much more special than just a digital download.)

Classic Black Sabbath

Classics: Black Sabbath

In February 2005 we ran the following Classics review to mark the 35th anniversary of the release of Black Sabbath's seminal debut album, which opened the floodgates to one of the most popular genres of music: heavy metal. Today we mark the 40th anniversary of this release by looking back again.

Now from Darkness There Springs Light
By Keavin Wiggins

When you look at groundbreaking albums that changed the direction of music forever Sgt Pepper probably comes to mind at once. Perhaps the second most influential band of all time is Black Sabbath and this month we look at the album that started it all. By all, I mean not only Black Sabbath but a whole new form of music-- Heavy Metal and its later offshoots.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Black Sabbath and its impact can still be felt in music today. Sabbath is one of the most significant artists of all time, right up there with Elvis, the Beatles, and the Stones. Some may try to downplay the impact of this album because it hasn't moved 20 gazillion units, but we can hear its importance to this day in every single metal and metal influence band that came after it.

By 1970 acid rock and the late 60s brand of heavy blues were still the rage among younger rock fans. Cream, Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge laid the groundwork. Led Zeppelin became an international sensation that the critics never understood but young fans immediately latched on to. It was the power of the distorted Blues and majesty of the lyrics that captured the imagination of a generation.

There is the famous scene in Spinal Tap where Nigel Tufnel talks to Marty DiBergi about his special guitar amplifier that "goes to 11". "When I need that little extra push over the cliff…" That little push over the cliff was what Black Sabbath delivered. Zeppelin II was released in October of 1969, five months later Black Sabbath delivered this self-titled debut and provided that little extra push over the cliff for many fans when they took the blues based heavy rock to a new extreme. Metal was born.

The album wouldn't hit American record stores until May of 1970, but it quietly built momentum as word of month spread about this amazing new band. By August, Black Sabbath had entered the American Top 40 album chart and remained there for over a year, going on to sell a million copies. Quite an impressive accomplishment in 1970.

But why did this album have such an impact? One listen tells the tale. The dark mesmerizing power of "Black Sabbath," "The Wizard," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," "N.I.B.," and "Warning" still send shivers down the spine. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like to fans in 1970 the first time they heard this dark symphony of distortion and power and the genius combining of one song into the next. As Ozzy sang "Now from Darkness there Springs Light," a strange metaphor when you consider the dark nature of metal, but it fits. As Led Zeppelin was moving into a new lighter direction with Led Zeppelin III (released Oct 70) Black Sabbath was giving the power hungry fans something to bang their heads to, but also sink their minds into. The one thing about the early Sabbath releases is that they are very visual. The power of the bass, drums and guitars grab you but the lyrics capture the imagination, bringing on visions in the mind's eye. Many bands have come after but very few have held the same captivating power of early Black Sabbath.

If you are a fan of metal, you owe it to yourself to own this album. Not only because, 40 years later it still stands out, but because on this disc you will hear the keystone to all the metal that came after. Sabbath were the rock John the Baptist, shouting in the wilderness about the coming messiah for rock n roll: heavy metal!

Them Crooked Vultures 2nd Album Plans

THEM CROOKED VULTURES, the band consisting of John Paul Jones (LED ZEPPELIN), Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS) and Josh Homme (QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE), is planning to regroup in the near future to resume work on material for its second album.

Jones told the BBC 6 Music: "Some stuff we've worked on, but we're gonna write pretty quickly and just put it down... we may be a year or so [away from completing the CD]."

He added: "It will mainly be excess material from the first album, material we started and never finished because we had to go and play the stuff we already recorded!"

Professionally filmed video footage of THEM CROOKED VULTURES performing the song "Gunman" on July 30, 2010 at the Fuji Rock Festival at the Naeba Ski Resort in Japan can be viewed below.

THEM CROOKED VULTURES released its self-titled debut album in November 2009 to a slew of critical acclaim and in just a few short months saw additional accolades including "best of 2009" lists from Spin, MySpace and Time Out. The CD, which has reached gold and platinum status in a number of territories, including U.K., Canada and Australia, is available in stores and online now.

THEM CROOKED VULTURES's album sold 70,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 12 on The Billboard 200 chart.

"Them Crooked Vultures" was released via DGC/Interscope Records.

THEM CROOKED VULTURES shot a video for the song "New Fang" with director Paul Minor (MUSE, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, SCARS ON BROADWAY).

Guns N' Roses NEW Album - Here We Go Again

Well here we go again, talk of a new album by the Gunners...hmm let's hope Axl will NOT keep us all waiting another decade before it comes out. It just can't be not this time, because no one is getting younger in the process.

Guns N’ Roses Talk About New Album
By Andrew Tijs

A member of Axl’s touring party has spoken about a new Gunners album.

It’s pretty hard to believe anything about Guns N’ Roses and release dates, considering Chinese Democracy became the totemic “forthcoming” album after 13 years in the making.

But current Gunners guitarist DJ Ashba gave hope to the band’s remaining fans during their set at Santa Monica Airport to plug a video game.

He reportedly said, “We've been throwing around a bunch of ideas and it should be good, man. We've got a lot of good stuff on the plate coming out. It won't take as long, I promise.”

And continued, “Yeah, I'm excited to get this next one rolling. A lot of great shit. Axl has a lot of good shit up his sleeve, so I'm really excited about it.”

According to the site that reported it, Hennemusic, Axl has had a longterm plan for new material to come out following Chinese Democracy.

They noted that back in 2002 Sebastian Bach said Axl had release plans for the final record in a trilogy by 2012.

We'll remain patient.

Jimmy Page Pictorial Book Public Exhibit in London

JIMMY PAGE: Public Exhibit Of Pictorial Autobiography To Be Held In London - Oct. 26, 2010

On November 5 and November 6, Genesis Publications will host an exhibit of images from the "Jimmy Page By Jimmy Page" book and selections from their archive at Elms Lester Painting Rooms, London, England.

"Jimmy Page By Jimmy Page" has become the fastest-selling book in the history of Genesis Publications, having sold-out through pre-orders alone. The book, which documents the iconic guitarist's life from his childhood in music through his legendary career with LED ZEPPELIN to the present day, was personally compiled by Page and features 650 images, many from his personal archive. Jimmy also wrote the accompanying text and helped design the magnificently luxurious binding to create an artefact that is an incredible visual documentary which reflects his vast contribution to music.

Genesis Publications will host an exhibition of images from the book plus selected books from 35 years publishing, at London's Elms Lester Painting Rooms on November 5 and November 6, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The exhibition is open to the public who will be able to see a collection of works by more than 70 different photographers including such legendary names as Kate Simon, Neal Preston, Ross Halfin and Pennie Smith.

As the book has sold out before its official launch, this will be the only chance to see these exclusive images outside of the limited-edition publication.

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=148341

(Imagine that an exhibit for images from Jimmy Page's autobiographical pictorial book! Well that's fine for all people living near London who wish to par take in the unveiling and for those that can't afford the book which is over 700 dollars!

Hmmm wonder how much it will cost to view said images at the exhibit in London.

Obviously there won't be a similar event here in the states for said book, so to me it's a pricey affair either way you slice it. Making a trek to London from the U.S. just to see the book images - think us Americans would do well to buy the book if you can afford it. Maybe Jimmy might out of the goodness of his heart do a version for fans of lesser means perhaps?)

Ringo Starr Childhood Home Closed Up

Ringo Starr Childhood Home Closed Up
By Music-News.com

Ringo Starr's childhood home has been boarded up to stop Beatles fans from stealing mementos from it.

The house ' number nine Madryn Street, Liverpool, North East England - has had metal shutters fitted to it after numerous souvenir hunters descended upon the property to take bricks from around the windows of the home, which is scheduled to be demolished. The shutters have been put in place as a safety measure, as if more bricks are removed the property could present a danger to passers-by.

Fans are lobbying to keep the home ' where the 70-year-old Beatles star's family lived when he was born - from being knocked down.

Philip Coppell, Chairman of the Save Madryn Street Society, said: 't is encouraging to see that the council has taken steps to halt the activities of the souvenir hunters.
'Fans from all over the world have objected to the demolition and we are still hopeful that we can persuade the city to revoke the demolition order.'
The home is the only house linked to a member of The Beatles ' Ringo, Sir Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison ' which does not have protected status.
Another group, The Beatles Society, wants to see the bricks sold off for charity if the house is demolished, with some parts saved for the local Liverpool Museum of Life.

The local council wants to knock down the home and surrounding streets to make way for new housing.

More from Music-News.com

(Fans will stop at nothing to get a piece of souvenir it seems. My wish is that they keep the house from being demolished and possibly make it a museum of sort, like they have done here in Salem, MA - The Witch House & The House of Seven Gables or in Plymouth, MA with Plymouth Rock though they do not charge a fee to view 'The Rock'. Charge a fee to tour the home and the dollars raised can go to whatever charity Ringo would like. I always lean towards perserving things of the past for future generations to see and get a feel for what came before.)

Jesters Jokers Fools Tricksters

Jesters

Crack open a new deck of cards, and what do you pull out? The jokers , of course. Also called jester, fool, trickster, buffoon, jack-pudding, and wearer of the motley, this character is nearly universally recognized, but seldom seen live anymore.

Historians believe that jesters entertained prehistoric tribal society with their Wise Fool antics. What is certain though is that court jesters grew and flourished in the Middle Ages as well-paid attendants of Europe’s Royal Courts. Power was highly consolidated in medieval times and social mobility was difficult. A child of peasants was likely to become a peasant, and stone masons gave the world more masons, just as royalty bred royalty. In contrast, jesters could move up the social ladder. They came from a wide range of backgrounds — from peasant farms and monasteries to universities. Quite a few had physical deformities and learned to wring laughs from what otherwise could’ve been an unfortunate situation. Usually, they climbed up the social ladder and were prized for their outsider’s humorous take on life. For instance, when Shakespeare’s King Lear was brooding alone in the woods, the only company he wanted was his amusing fool.

Not all jesters were so lucky to do lunch with the royals. Most subsisted by performing in the marketplace or town square, showcasing their art on a simple stage they “built,” such as a decorative carpet thrown on the ground, or a circle drawn with a stick in a village square. These resourceful jesters would gather an audience with clever attention-grabbing techniques (“Come see me leap from the bell tower…while sipping an ale!”) and after enough curious bystanders gathered, they’d begin their show, which steadily climbed to a climax, at which point they would solicit donations from the crowd. If an especially amusing jester was lucky enough to be seen by a royal court representative, he could get an invitation to audition as a court jester. Definitely a gig not to turn down!

Black Sabbath/Ozzy Halloween & FREE Goodies

Our band of the month is Black Sabbath & Ozzy Osbourne! October is full of fun with Rocktober & Halloween and Black Sabbath seems to fit the bill for this month of metal & darkness.

https://rockstartshirts.ecrater.com/filter.php?keywords=ozzy&x=0&y=0

Black Sabbath Biography:

Formed 1967, Birmingham, England

Mixing equal parts of bone-crushing volume, catatonic tempos, and ominous pronouncements of gloom and doom delivered in Ozzy Osbourne’s keening voice, Black Sabbath was the heavy-metal king of the Seventies. Despised by rock critics and ignored by radio programmers, the group sold over eight million albums before Osbourne departed for a solo career in 1979.

The four original members, schoolmates from a working-class district of industrial Birmingham, first joined forces as Polka Tulk, a blues band. They quickly changed their name to Earth, then, in 1969, to Black Sabbath; the name came from the title of a song written by bassist Geezer Butler, a fan of occult novelist Dennis Wheatley. The quartet’s eponymously titled 1970 debut, recorded in two days, went to #8 in England and #23 in the U.S. A single, "Paranoid," released in advance of the album of the same name, reached #4 in the U.K. later that year, it was the group’s only Top Twenty hit.

The single didn’t make the US, Top Forty, but the Paranoid LP, issued in early 1971, eventually sold four million copies despite virtually no airplay. Beginning in December 1970 Sabbath toured the States relentlessly. The constant road work paid off, and by 1974 Black Sabbath was considered peerless among heavy-metal acts, its first five LPs all having sold at least a million copies apiece in America alone.

In spite of its name, the crosses erected onstage, and songs dealing with apocalypse, death, and destruction, the band members insisted their interest in the black arts was nothing more than innocuous curiosity (the sort that led Ozzy Osbourne to sit through eight showings of The Exorcist), and in time Black Sabbath’s princes-of-darkness image faded.

Eventually, so did its record sales. Aside from a platinum best-of, We Sold Our Soul for Rock ‘n’ Roll (1976), not one of three LPs from 1975 to 1978 went gold. Osbourne, racked by drug use and excessive drinking, quit the band briefly in late 1977 (former Savoy Brown- Fleetwood Mac vocalist Dave Walker filled his shoes for some live dates). In January 1979 he left again, this time for good. Ronnie James Die, formerly of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, replaced Osbourne.

Although Dio could belt with the best of them, Sabbath would never be the same. Its first album with Dio, Heaven and Hell (1980), went platinum, its second, Mob Rules (1981), gold. But thereafter, the group’s LPs sold fewer and fewer copies, as Black Sabbath went through one personnel change after another. III health forced Bill Ward out of the band in 1981; Carmine Appice’s brother Vinnie took his place. Friction between Iommi and Dio led the singer to quit angrily in 1982, he took P with him to start his own band, Die. Vocalists over the years have included Dave Donato; Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan; Glenn Hughes, another ex-member of Purple; Tony Martin; and Dio again.

By 1986’s Seventh Star, only Iommi remained from the original lineup. He had to wince when Geezer Butler teamed up with the phenomenally successful Osboume in 1988, though the bassist did return to the fold three years later. Despite bitterness expressed in the press between Osbourne and Iommi, the original foursome reunited in 1985 at the Live-Aid concert in Philadelphia, and again in 1992, at the end of what was supposedly Osbourne’s last tour. Throughout 1993 word had it that Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, and Ward would tour, but by year’s end Osbourne had backed out, allegedly over money. The indefatigable Tony Iommi went right back to work with Butler, rehiring vocalist Tony Martin and adding former Rainbow drummer Rob Rondinelli.

Ozzy And Rollins Become Columnists

Ozzy And Rollins Become Columnists

By Andrew Tijs

Ozzy Osbourne and Henry Rollins have been given column inches online and in the glossies.

At the beginning of the year, notorious rock animal Ozzy Osbourne was asked to give medical advice to readers of the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper.

The joke goes on, as Rolling Stone has given Ozzy room to dish out lifestyle advice to its readers in the "Ask Dr. Ozzy" column.

The first column, published in the latest issue, sees Ozzy tackle weight issues, vertigo, and the case of a woman who discovered her son has looked at porn online.

Punk rock icon Henry Rollins has also been given a column, this time in LA Weekly.

He’s been blogging in the ‘West Coast Sound’ music section of LA Weekly every Friday.

His first two columns have covered his return to the US, Rickie Lee Jones, Thomas Wolfe, Fela Kuti, Keiji Haino, and his restlessness in LA.

Jason Bonham Interview

Growing up in England, it took a while for Jason Bonham to fully understand the fame of his father, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

"Not to be harsh about it, but nobody in England really gave a s—-," Bonham said with a laugh. "It's true. In England, they were just guys. My dad would go down to the local pub with the farmers and locals and they'd say, 'There's the long-haired guy again. He's a drummer in a rock band. Make a living out of that, can you?' I can see why they never could have lived in America. They could never have normal lives here, but they could go home and be normal people."

For most of the '70s, Led Zeppelin ruled the hearts of American teenagers. But tragedy stopped the band in its tracks. On Sept. 24, 1980, the elder Bonham started the day with four quadruple vodkas and continued drinking throughout the afternoon. That evening, he died in his sleep. He was 32 years old. Jason was just 14.

Jason Bonham went on to pursue the drums himself and joined the surviving members of Led Zeppelin for a one-off 2007 concert paying tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The show sparked talk of an LZ reunion that never panned out, nor did plans for Bonham to join guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones with a new vocalist. Instead, Bonham put together a tribute group, dubbed John Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, and a multi-media show that hits the State Theatre tonight.

We spoke to Bonham last week and here's what he had
Advertisement
Quantcast
to say about his father and his current tour.

ON TAKING UP THE FAMILY BUSINESS:

"My dad was the one who put the drumsticks in my hands at a very early age. But I got very heavily into motocross when I was 10. I saw a motorcycle when we were on vacation in the south of France and fell in love. The first time I ever noticed we were a little different was when we turned up to my first race with my bike attached to the hitch of a Rolls Royce. But after dad's death, I wanted to carry on the family tradition and I have ever since."

ON THE SHOW'S MULTI-MEDIA ASPECTS:

"I center the concert around archival footage. Some of it shows dad as a child, where we're from, what our home life was like. My mom went through all this footage. She has tons and tons of stuff that she's never let out before. I hadn't seen some of this stuff myself. You see my dad as a prankster and a joker. The fans love it. And at one point, I play 'Moby Dick' with my dad. We split the screens and we play together. It's a bit strange. Now, I'm the 44-year-old playing with my 20-year-old dad."

ON LIVING WITH HIS FATHER'S LEGACY:

"It is hard to have your own identity when you dad is John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, but I accept and love the fact of who my dad is. I understand that my dad is the greatest, I just try to play to the best of my ability."

ON THE POSSIBILITY OF PLAYING WITH LED ZEPPELIN AGAIN:

"If you had asked me in 2005, when I had just joined Foreigner, that I would leave the band in 2007 to play with Led Zeppelin, I would have said you're nuts. When Ahmet passed away, I had a feeling they were going to do something and they did. I don't know if it will happen again. I had a great time with them. It was one of the greatest feelings in the world to be in that seat."

ON THE MOMENT BONHAM FINALLY DID FIGURE OUT THE SCALE OF HIS FATHER'S SUCCESS:

"I went to the 1977 show in Tampa, where there were 86,000 people there. I looked at him and said 'Who else is playing? Are the Stones here?' But it was just them. That was a moment to remember."

Darkness Darkness - Robert Plant

Here is a video of Robert Plant doing Darkness Darkness from his Dreamland album (2002). A haunting dark & gothic song and one of my favorites on that album. I saw Robert perform this song live at the Orpheum Theater in Boston & it's one of those songs that pulls you in and you're on this journey with Robert, you feel what he feels. You feel a sense of yearning. Yearning - a deep feeling within, longing, wanting, reaching out...it's very seductive, so vampiric. I love music that touches the soul and this song is one of those.

Darkness Darkness - Robert Plant
(Jesse Colin Young)

Darkness, Darkness, be my pillow, Take my head and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow, In the silence of your deep
Darkness, darkness, hide my yearning, For the things I cannot see
Keep my mind from constant turning, To the things I cannot be
Darkness, darkness, be my blanket, cover me with the endless night
Take away the pain of knowing, fill the emptiness with light
Emptiness with light now

Darkness, darkness, long and lonesome, Is the day that brings me here
I have felt the edge of sadness, I have known the depths of fear
Darkness, darkness, be my blanket, Cover me with the endless night
Take away this pain of knowing, Fill this emptiness with light now
Emptiness with light now

Darkness, darkness, be my blanket, cover me with the endless night
Take away this pain of knowing, fill this emptiness with light now
Oh with light now.
Darkness, Darkness, be my pillow, Take my head and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow, In the silence of your deep
In the silence of your deep
In the - oh oh yeah
In the summer baby
come on come on come on baby...

Robert Plant on Q TV Interview

Robert Plant on Q TV Interview

This is a great interview with Robert Plant. Talking about music, what inspires him, his new album, working with Alisson Krauss and now with Band of Joy. Throwing jabs at bands like Black Sabbath (which I happen to love) but I believe it's Robert being a bit sarcastic.

Alice Cooper/Jim Morrison Connection

Alice Cooper/Jim Morrison Connection

Here is a video with a song from Alice Cooper that he wrote in memory for his friend Jim Morrison. It comes from the album 'Killer' (1971). But this was also stated about this song:

Killer is the 1971 album by Alice Cooper.

Cooper said in the liner notes of Fistful of Alice and also on In the Studio with Redbeard, which spotlighted the Killer and Love it to Death albums, that the song "Desperado" was written about his friend Jim Morrison who died the same year this album was released. According to an NPR radio interview with Alice Cooper, "Desperado" was written about Robert Vaughn's character from the movie The Magnificent Seven.

A little more on Alice and the character of Alice and why he believes Jim Morrison died.

In the early days when I was drinking ... I had a very blurry line about where those two were... but I mean, that happens when you drink twenty-two hours a day. I would just sit and drink. I didn’t know whether or not I was supposed to be Alice when I went out for dinner and was a little lit. Then there was the question about whether or not I should wear the make up because I didn’t really want to disappoint anyone. Was I supposed to get into trouble? Was I supposed to get arrested that night? All of those questions went through my mind. You have to remember though who my older brothers and sisters were though--guys like Jim Morrison and Keith Moon and all the people who were living that life. After they all died, I just sat there and went, “if one generation is going to learn from the next the truth is going to have to be that you don’t have to die to be your character.” I figured then that I had better be able to separate the two. When I go onstage as Alice to this day, I play Alice to the hilt — I play him for everything he is worth, but when I’m offstage, I never think about Alice Cooper. He never occurs to me. .. I walk off stage though and I turn away from the audience, I go back to being me again. Whenever I see an audience, that’s when I turn into Alice. If there was no audience there, there would be no reason to be Alice. . If I tried to be Alice Cooper all the time — I’d either be in an insane asylum or in jail or dead. Alice is just too intense, and you just can’t be Alice all the time. Jim Morrison couldn’t be Jim Morrison, so he died. Jimi Hendrix couldn’t be Jimi Hendrix, so he died. That’s really what killed Janis Joplin, Keith Moon and all the way down the line. They were all animated characters who couldn’t live up to their lifestyle, so I said that I needed to be able to separate the two — that’s why I’m still here.

Desperado - Alice Cooper

I'm a gambler
And I'm a runner
But you knew that
When you lay down

I'm a picture
Of ugly stories
I'm a killer
And I'm a clown

Step into the street by sundown
Step into your last goodbye
You're a target just by living
Twenty dollars will make you die

I wear lace
And I wear black leather
My hands are lightning upon my gun

My shots are clean
And my, my shots are final
My shots are deadly
And when it's done

You're as stiff as my smoking barrel
You're as dead as a desert night
You're a notch
And I'm a legend
You're at peace
And I must hide

Tell me where the hell I'm going
Let my bones fall in the dust
Can't you hear that ghost that's calling
As my Colt begins to rust
In the dust

I'm a killer
I'm a clown
I'm a priest
That's gone to town

Billy Idol Plans Memoir

Billy Idol Plans Memoir

By Andrew Tijs

Billy Idol has signed a contract for his memoir, to be titled Dancing With Myself.

The ‘80s rock icon has signed a deal with Touchstone, a subsidiary of publishing house Simon & Schuster.

The memoir, named after the iconic first single from his first punk band Generation X and rereleased as a solo track, is due out in late 2011 or 2012.

Instead of using a ghost-writer, Idol will write the book himself, a press release describing him as “a natural-born storyteller”.

Idol said in the press release:

“Life gave me a golden key when I fell in love with rock n roll music. It was the key to the answer of how to live and achieve your dreams. This world opened up to me with all the good opportunities but also every temptation - the drugs, the booze, the women, the 24-hour around-the-clock excess. And yet you have to write good songs to survive. Life had to be lived to do all that! Now I’m putting it all down in book form - from the heart. I’m going out on a limb here, so watch my back.”

Billy Idol is still recording and performing, having just finished off an extensive US tour in September and planning four Californian shows in December.

(Another interesting book to read. Besides the Bowie book this Billy Idol book should be really cool to read. I'm liking that these books are all being written by the artists themselves.)

Bowie Object - Book by David Bowie

David Bowie Book Entitled - Bowie Object

David Bowie is working on a book entitled Bowie: Object, though there is no firm publishing date in place yet. According to Bowie's website, the book is a "collection of pieces from the Bowie archive, wherein, for the first time, fans and all those interested in popular culture will have the opportunity to understand more about the Bowie creative process and his impact on modern popular music." The details are still vague, but the site also says that Bowie: Object will feature "100 fascinating items that give an insight into the life of one of the most unique music and fashion icons in history. The book's pictorial content is annotated with insightful, witty and personal text written by Bowie himself."

(This should be quite interesting, David Bowie is a chameleon with great talent and would be great to see the inner workings of a creative genius in action. I've always liked David Bowie and all his get ups and his voice is spectacular, very crooner indeed :)

Robert Plant Interview by Jeff Woods

My Sit Down With Robert Plant - Interview

Jeff Woods | September 27, 2010 3:15 pm

“Nothing is daunting for me but forever challenging,” says Robert Plant. “I have to be able to just get out there into the great drift of music and possibility, and hang onto great themes and ideas”.

When Robert Plant collected the 2009 Grammy for Album of the Year for Raising Sand, and five more for his work with singer Alison Krauss, it confirmed what has been apparent - that Plant is among the musicians of his generation whose appetite for musical innovation remains keen.

Plant chose to explore the territory unearthed with Raising Sand while working with a new group of musicians named after the combo he played with back in the Sixties. The new album, Band Of Joy, features intriguing new interpretations of songs from a wide range of sources, including Los Lobos, Richard Thompson, the Minnesota indie trio Low, Texan singer songwriter Townes Van Zandt, and others. Crucial to the new project was guitarist and co-producer Buddy Miller.

Band of Joy is now available pretty much everywhere you choose to buy music.

And now, so is my conversation with Robert right here, for free. Click on link below to read and hear this interview.

How to Achieve the Rocker Chick Look

How to Achieve the Rocker Chick Look
By Riz S. Davis

Sexy but rebellious, sophisticated but rugged, feminine but tough. That's what the "rocker chick" fashion is all about, the over all expression of style and individuality. You don't have to know how to play drums, or strum the guitar, or be a member of a rock band to sport this fashion, although it is apparent that women who are into rock music and bands tend to naturally acquire this sense of style.

There are a lot of ways to achieve the rock chic fashion:

1. Get some skinny jeans or torn leggings on. Faded and torn jeans give off that casual I-don't-give-a-damn attitude, while studded and leather leggings show off that sexy look.

2. Dress shirts, tank tops, rock band shirts, statements shirts and off-the-shoulder tops are the way to go, it doesn't matter if they're tight fit or very loose. The idea is to make a statement in whatever top you choose.

3. Draw attention to your feet! Whether it's a pair of Chuck Taylors, studded pumps, bright colored stilettos, or faded leather boots, the point is they have to grab attention.

4. No, they don't have to be black. While black is essential in achieving the rockstar look, you don't necessarily have to stick with that color alone. Don't be afraid to combine it with flashy colors - hot pink, electric blue, or bloody red - after all, rocker chick fashion is bold and daring.

5. Don't be afraid to put on animal printed jackets or coats with faux fur collars if you're in the mood for it. A leather jacket is a must. Often, it doesn't matter what you have underneath, the leather jacket alone is very rock and very chic as it is.

6. Accessories are important in achieving this rockstar look. Accessorize with over-sized watches, leather bracelets, long chain necklaces, studs and spikes.

7. Carry a loose metallic bag or a thrifted leather bag to finish off. You can also vandalize an old bag with writings, glitters and studs!

8. Most of all, just be your rockstar self. When you feel you're a rockstar at heart, you wouldn't have to try so hard the rocker chick in you will just show.

Brand Neusense is not only home to your favourite brand name designer clothes, but we are completely fanatical about discovering the design superstars, fashion gurus and killer brands of the future.

Punk Blondes have more fun

Punk Blondes have more fun

(Especially when they are the one and only Debbie Harry of Blondie. In her heyday she was the epitome of sex appeal cool and still today rocker girls try to emulate her ways that she made so cool back a few decades ago!)

By DEMELZA DE BURCA
Wednesday Jun 27 2007

If you think those Ray-Ban Wayfarers, waistcoat and hot pants you are sporting this summer are a completely original style, then just take a look at this picture of Debbie Harry - shot in 1977

With her trademark white-blonde hair and razor-sharp cheekbones, the pouting Blondie singer launched a unique brand of sex appeal when she first burst onto the music scene in the late 1970s.

Debbie Harry merged the raw, dirty heyday of punk with the clean angles of emerging New Wave pop and became an icon.

So it's no surprise that a modern day fashionista such as Kate Moss was keen to resurrect the look. Copy-Kate has been going into overdrive since Mossy modelled the waistcoat and hot pants combo at the Glastonbury music festival in 2005. Thanks to the high street and Kate’s own Top-shop line, her ‘festival-chic’ style has trickled down to the masses with thousands of Glasto-goers adopting the Blondie look at last weekend’s event

Roger Waters is planning to make minor updates to The Wall to better reflect where he is in life.

“We had to deal with the fact that it was one thing for a man in his 30s to sing about his young adult life,” Waters told Rolling Stones. “But it’s something else to go on doing that when you’re in your 60s.”

He also mentioned that the show is “basically the same” as the tour Pink Floyd did in the late 70s, but “with a broader meaning.”

Plant Makes it Clear Zep Days Over

According to The Pulse of Radio, Robert Plant has once again made it clear his hard-rocking LED ZEPPELIN days are over. Vintage Vinyl News reported that after attending a recent concert by ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones' new band THEM CROOKED VULTURES, Plant told the press, "I feel so far away from heavy rock now. It's quite odd how mine and John's paths seem to have crossed over. We've sort of gone into each other's world's a bit." Plant, who revealed that his ears "bled for two days" following ZEPPELIN's 2007 reunion gig at London's O2 arena added: "For me, it's no longer to do with vanity, ego and visible success. It's just about getting down into the earth of music. I spent three or four years never playing a ZEPPELIN song from 1981 onwards, because I didn't want to lean on ZEPPELIN. I've gone from being in that huge band to picking up the pieces of my own gift."

Todd Rundgren who performed at Britain's legendary Knebworth festival along with ZEPPELIN back in 1979, said that he doesn't blame Plant for shying away from trying to duplicate his vocals from 35 or 40 years ago: "Robert Plant will probably always have a gig somewhere. And the only reason for him to reunite with the LED ZEPPELIN thing is because it would just be huge money involved, I guess. But he has an opportunity to play music that he feels like. Some music that he may feel actually more akin to than what he's, I guess 'obligated' to do (laughs) at this point with LED ZEPPELIN. Everything that he did after he left LED ZEPPELIN was an octave lower (than the ZEPPELIN songs). (Laughs) And now he's got to go back and sing and scream at the top of his lungs."

(It's been heading down this road for a very long time. Truth is you can't go back to yesterday, Robert knows he can not do it anymore and feels he is no longer that person that once sang Stairway to Heaven & Whole Lotta Love. He remembers those days but he is who he has become and wants to express what he is today. So if it's soft folky tunes he wants to do so be it. It happens to us all, we mature, mellow out & get on with what we have become. If you want to hear the call of the wild then you always have the albums which are timeless to hear.)

Scott Weiland Launches Clothing Line

Scott Weiland Launches Clothing Line

September 1, 2010

Scott Weiland
On August 29, Scott Weiland sat down with ExploreMusic host Alan Cross in Toronto to discuss a wide array of topics, from the launch of his new clothing line to the status of Stone Temple Pilots and even his next project: a Christmas album. They began by discussing Weiland For English Laundry, a new clothing collaboration with English Laundry designer Christopher Wicks, which features rock-inspired wovens, vests, t-shirts, pants, hats, ties and scarves. Weiland said the clothing line was inspired by David Bowie's look in the late '70s as well as '60s-era Rolling Stones.

"I think that fashion and music really go hand-in-hand," Weiland told Cross. "If you look at Elvis Presley through the '60s where it really took off -- Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who -- fashion influenced Rock & Roll, which influenced fashion. Whenever they're synonymous with each other, that's when there's a real possible movement that can happen. The last real movement that happened in Rock & Roll was Grunge. It may not have been the most glamorous of fashion movements, but it was a real movement within Rock & Roll."

The singer then explained that he hopes a career in fashion design is a long term thing for him as he doesn't want to be "a slave to the road" anymore. "I'd like to tour when I want to tour, but I really prefer making albums," he said. "I love performing when I want to, I detest the feeling when it comes down to punching in the clock every night. It's difficult in the Rock business for everyone, so I am trying to branch out into other artistic endeavors like fashion."

When asked how the Stone Temple Pilots reunion has gone so smoothly, Weiland replied, "It's a family. It's like any relationship with four brothers. It's politics, it's a democracy. We don't always get along, but we've found out how to get along and how to make it work."

Weiland also said he will do more solo projects in the future and that he's in the process of recording a Christmas album right now. It will be "traditional Jazz style" music with strings, upright bass, horns and piano, and Weiland is still picking various versions of the Christmas songs he'd like to cover.

The full interview segments can be viewed on the ExploreMusic website here.

(I totally agree with Scott that rock n roll and fashion go hand in hand and influence each other. The look he is trying to create sounds really cool & classy at the same time. Wish him much success.)

Axl Rose Wars With UK Festival Promoters

Axl Rose Wars With UK Festival Promoters

by Andrew Tijs - August 30 2010

Axl Rose sneers at promoters as Guns N Roses’ Leeds Festival set is cut short.

At the Reading Festival, Guns N Roses came on an hour late and had their set curtailed by the UK’s noise restriction laws which prevent festivals from carrying on after midnight.

The band returned to play their Leeds Festival headliner with the same snarky attitude, Rose claiming that the promoters were cutting them off again.

NME reports that Rose said from the stage at 11:20pm, "We would like to play a few more songs for you tonight. But someone is telling us the show's over. This war ain't over yet."

He claimed that the band were told earlier that they could perform until 11:58pm, but the Leeds and Reading festival boss Melvin Benn refuted the claim.

Following the outburst, the Gunners did an encore of ‘Paradise City’ and left, Rose telling the audience “Be safe getting out of here. And for the problems with the promoters: fuck you.”

Despite Axl’s combative statements, Benn said that he would “definitely” book the band again but doubts he'll "be getting a Christmas card from them, which is a shame because tonight was great".

(They shouldn't have been late, but being rock stars with attitude they feel they're above everything. If the promoters did in fact tell GnR that they could play till almost midnight then said we never said that, I can see why Axl told them fuck you, tell it like it is Axl :)

My New York: Blondie

My New York Blondie's view

One way or another, new wave icon Blondie has retained their punk aesthetic since banding together 35 years ago. Founders (and former lovers) Deborah Harry, 65, and Chris Stein, 60, bemoan the demise of grass-roots stomping grounds such as CBGB and Mother. “The whole nature of culture in New York has really taken a nose dive, basically,” says Harry, a longtime Chelsea resident. “It’s much harder for musicians and artists to do what they do without really having to scuffle.” Blondie, meanwhile, continues to do what it does. The group, which also includes drummer Clem Burke, plays at the Nokia Theatre on Tuesday night and plans to release an album of new material, “Panic of Girls,” later this year. This is their New York.

Robert Plant Happy Entertaining Without Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant interview: singer happy to entertain without Led Zeppelin reunion

By Neil McCormick
Published: 3:59PM BST 20 Aug 2010

Back in the 1970s, as the priapic frontman for Led Zeppelin, Plant pronounced himself a “Golden God”. These days, with long, curling hair and roguish goatee beard, the 61-year-old rock deity comes over more as a wise old sage.

Sitting in a hotel lobby in Dallas, he says, in a soft, Midlands burr: “This city brings back a lot of memories. This was where I rehearsed for my first post-Zeppelin gig.

"It was all huge emotional chaos in me, ’cause I was about to go out without the great force field. I was the only one carrying this thing, this myth state, to the centre of stage. There was a huge feeling of loss.”

It was his role fronting the ground-breaking, world-conquering rock quartet for 12 years that established Plant as one of Britain’s greatest voices, and rock culture’s most defining archetypes.

So what is he doing here, three decades on, playing a tour of intimate theatres with an all-singing ensemble of American roots and country virtuosos, in a group named in honour of his teenage psychedelic blues outfit, Band Of Joy?

“Well, that’s what I feel like,” he says. “Somewhere between a teenager and an old man, making my debut album. It’s freedom.”

Plant genuinely seems to be having the time of his life. While fans and former band mates have been clamouring for a Zeppelin reunion, Plant has been resolutely pursuing his own idiosyncratic path.

And it has taken him somewhere close to where it all started, singing blues and folk in clubs around the English Black Country.

“The sort of haphazardness of the way this thing developed makes me think of those glorious days when there was no concern about maintaining success, it was just so free.”

The original sixties Band Of Joy featured Plant and lifelong friend, the late Led Zeppelin drummer, John “Bonzo” Bonham.

Plant depicts himself as a white kid trying to interpret “all that kind of miasma of the dark voodoo hoochie coochie black American thing”.

Band Of Joy, he says, were fiercely in pursuit of something they all felt was “absolutely crucial” but which few others could be persuaded to embrace.

“We only had three or four places we could play in the UK and the rest of the time we’d be siphoning fuel out of cars in the middle of the night and nicking milk off doorsteps at 4am. I had nothing to lose, so it was just sort of 'who cares, as long as it's jumping?’”

It is this mindset that Plant seems to have fully embraced. Working with outstanding American musicians such as the guitarist Buddy Miller and the country queen Patty Griffin, he runs Band Of Joy as a kind of revue, with all the members harmonising and taking turns at lead vocals as they cover old songs in a huge range of styles: blues, gospel, folk and country (and enough reworked Zeppelin covers and hints of wild psych rock to keep old fans entranced).

Plant was 19 when he was recruited in 1968 by session guitarist Jimmy Page for a new group, bringing in his old friend Bonham alongside bassist John Paul Jones.

Despite a perception that Plant has spent much of his solo career trying to shut the door on his time as a rock god, he remains hugely proud of Led Zeppelin.

“We were never a middle of the road band, we were really quite fearsome.”

But he has admitted that his heart went out of it after his five-year-old son, Karac, died of a viral infection in 1977. The subsequent (drink related) death of Bonham in 1980 hit him very hard and the group decided to break up.

Plant’s career has followed a wayward path, taking him from the vintage R’n’B of The Honeydrippers to a wild concoction of hybridised world music with his band Strange Sensation.

In 2007, his extraordinary, ethereal album with the bluegrass singer Alison Krauss, Raising Sand, set him on another path, exploring roots Americana.

It went on to win five Grammy awards in the US, including Album of the Year.

But just as his Krauss collaboration was lifting off, Zeppelin reunited for one night only at the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert at London’s O2 Arena in December 2007, with Jason Bonham taking his father’s place behind the drum kit.

“I really had a wonderful time,” says Plant. “It was the best Led Zeppelin gig since 1975.” Many would like the reunion to have continued, including his band mates. When I spoke to Jimmy Page earlier this year, he said: "You’d better ask Robert Plant what the future of Led Zeppelin is.”

So I put the question directly to Plant: would he do it again?

“I don’t think so,” he sighs. “You’ve got to have a lot in common with the people you’re working with at this time in your life. Everything has to move on and forward, in all relationships.

"I know that bands that haven’t put out a record for 10 years are playing to 20,000 people a night. But that’s not the achievement. The achievement is to knock yourself out. It’s a very selfish thing. The tail must never wag the dog.”

So instead of touring stadiums, Plant is taking his personal roots revue around small venues.

“You can create an intimacy that this music kind of demands and its not getting lost in some crazy cube which is going to be holding a car show the following week.

"Theatres are built because they were the boards for entertainment. Something about looking up into those proscenium arches and seeing all the dangling ropes and all that stuff makes you think 'yeah, I’ve actually made it! I’m an entertainer’.”

Robert Plant and The Band Of Joy play London’s HMV Forum on Sept 2. The album Band Of Joy is released by Rounder on Sept 13.

(This article really seals it, Robert just is not up for any Led Zeppelin reunion tour at all. He is quite happy doing his smaller venues and being intimate with the audience. I do understand how he feels. I'm sure when he looks at himself in the mirror he knows there is no way that he can do what he did do when he was 25. Time takes care of that and there is no way to turn back time, you can just remember but you can never experience it again at least not in the same way. Once it's gone it's gone. At least he seems to have a positive attitude and a sense of freedom now in his golden years. At this point in time he deserves to be able to do what makes him the most happy.)

Here is a short Bio from his page:

Robert Plant made his first commercial recordings in 1966. In 1967, he had also formed a group called the Band of Joy, with drummer John Bonham. Soon, Bonham, Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones assembled to become The New Yardbirds which became Led Zeppelin. The Led Zeppelin era ended in 1980 when John Bonham died. Since that time, Plant has put his wide-ranging musical fascination to good use on solo albums, with Jimmy Page, and in recordings with bands like The Honeydrippers, Priory of Brion, and Strange Sensation. His performances have reflected his embrace of West Coast psychedelic rock, roots blues, African music, and traditional folk.

For Band of Joy, Plant enlisted his Raising Sand bandmate Buddy Miller as co-producer. "I approached Buddy Miller because he had been lighting every room that I played in when I was with Alison - and his knowledge and his gaze; he's like a curator of a rock and roll museum packed away in three or four guitar cases and you could take these guitars out and tune them accordingly...and create some juju." Why give the album the name of one of his earliest bands? "In the Band of Joy, when I was seventeen, I was playing everybody else's stuff and moving it around, and it's kind of...time to reinvoke that attitude and sentiment."
