Page Beat Beck To Yardbirds Call

Page Beat Beck To Yardbirds Call

Guitar great JEFF BECK almost missed out on his chance to become a member of British supergroup the YARDBIRDS - JIMMY PAGE was asked to join the band before him.

In his first joint interview with Eric Clapton - the man he replaced in the group in 1965 - Beck reveals Page was initially approached to fill the gap left by Clapton, but he turned the offer down.

The future Led Zeppelin rocker eventually joined the Yardbirds when Beck left - but he could have been a part of the iconic group years before.

Beck tells Rolling Stone magazine, "They asked him first. He turned them down... (so) I got the call."

The guitarist admits his early days in the band were tough - because he was living in the shadow of Clapton: "When I joined the Yardbirds, all I kept hearing was stories in the van: 'Eric wouldn't have done this, Eric wouldn't have done that.' I went, 'Shut the f**k up, Eric isn't in the band.'"

During the joint chat, Clapton admits he's surprised his former Yardbirds bandmates liked him - because he was so "disagreeable".

He explains, "They didn't like me when I was in the band... Anyone who didn't know (blues great) Robert Johnson, I didn't want to know them."

Lydon Turned Down Pink Floyd

Lydon Turned Down Pink Floyd

SEX PISTOLS star JOHN LYDON turned down an invitation to join music legends PINK FLOYD, because he feared he'd appear pretentious.

Lydon insists he's a huge fan of the pop icons - despite a famous photograph of him wearing a T-shirt with the slogan I Hate Pink Floyd - claiming the band's early music heavily influenced the Sex Pistols.

So he was stunned when the remaining members of Pink Floyd asked him to help them re-record their iconic album Dark Side of the Moon.

Lydon tells The Stool Pigeon, "I've no idea where I got (that T-shirt) from. You'd have to be daft as a brush to say you didn't like Pink Floyd. They've done great stuff. Dark Side Of The Moon, I love.

"Two years ago when they came to L.A., they asked me would I come on and do a bit of Dark Side of The Moon with them and the idea thrilled me no end. It would have been very, very neat but it stunk a little in my head of 'What am I doing here?' I came so close to doing it, (but) it felt like I was trying to set myself up as some kind of pretentious person."

Lydon admits he regrets turning the offer down, and is hoping he'll get asked again: "I wanted to do it. But just not when 20,000 people were there. I'd have gone to a studio and played around with it there. But not for the bigger picture. Privately. I'd love to go into the studio and do something with the album with them."

Aerosmith

Despite all the Aerosmith drama lately, the band has been confirmed to play the U.K.'s massive Download Festival with Steven Tyler at the helm. Classic Rock magazine reports that festival promoter Andy Copping has booked Aerosmith on the condition that the band is only fronted by Tyler. The move follows weeks of speculation that Joe Perry and the rest of the band were looking for a replacement singer, at least on a temporary basis, while Tyler addressed his health issues. The festival will take place at Leicestershire's Donington Park the weekend of June 11-13 with other headliners such as Rage Against the Machine, Them Crooked Vultures, Stone Temple Pilots and AC/DC, plus the newly added Lamb of God, Stone Sour, Billy Idol, Five Finger Death Punch and 30 Seconds to Mars.

EMI Putting Abbey Road Up For Sale?

EMI Putting Abbey Road Up For Sale?

As part of EMI's financial restructuring, the music company is reportedly putting the legendary Abbey Road studios up for sale. According to the Financial Times' sources, EMI has been putting out feelers for bidders on the property to further chip away at its debts. EMI has not confirmed the reports.

It is unknown whether EMI would sell the Abbey Road name along with the property itself, but one media lawyer told the FT, "The brand is worth more than the building . . . anybody who wants the studios will want the brand." A sale of Abbey Road could bring in tens of millions of pounds to the troubled company.

The Abbey Road building was bought by EMI in 1929 for £100,000 and became the first custom-built recording studios in the world. It was used to record the London Symphony Orchestra in the '30s and making World War II propaganda later on. The Beatles famously recorded the majority of their music at the studio and made it a household name with their 1969 Abbey Road album.

Pink Floyd recorded Dark Side Of The Moon at Abbey Road, which has also been used by Radiohead, Oasis, Blur and many more over the years. However, with the costs involved in recording music dropping, Abbey Road has become a pricey extravagance for musicians. "What you have is a very, very expensive piece of heritage. If an artist goes to a label and asks to record at Abbey Road they will be met with maniacal laughter," the media lawyer told the FT.
