Arthur Lee Passes On

Legendary LOVE star ARTHUR LEE died in a Memphis, Tennessee hospital yesterday (03AUG06) following a battle with leukaemia. He was 61. The ALONE AGAIN OR singer/guitarist passed away at the city's Methodist University Hospital at 5pm local time. His wife DIANE was by his side. Lee's manager MARK LINN says, "His death comes as a shock to me because Arthur had the uncanny ability to bounce back from everything, and leukaemia was no exception. "He was confident that he would be back on stage by the fall." Lee described himself as "the first so-called black hippie" and formed Love in 1965 after moving from his native Memphis to Los Angeles. The psychedelic group's third album, 1968's FOREVER CHANGES, sold few copies on its initial release but has since come to be regarded as one of the most accomplished albums of all time. During the 1990s Lee was imprisoned for six years after firing a gun into the air. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia earlier this year (06) and underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, all of which failed. In May (06), he became the first adult in Tennessee to have a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from an umbilical cord. A series of benefit concerts were staged for him, including one headlined by ex-LED ZEPPELIN singer ROBERT PLANT, a long-term Love fan, in New York City in June.
